Episode 37 | Solve Messy Hiring with Regina Gulbinas

The Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship

What do people mean by finding the right person for your team and why is that so important?

Finding the right people to support you in your business is the same as looking for a life partner in your personal life. You have to have the right partner by your side in both your business and your personal life. Having the wrong employees or even the right employees in the wrong position is going to get extremely expensive even financially.

It is critical to your life and the future of your company to have the right people to support your vision and mission.

Hire slow. Fire fast.

Take your time when you are hiring and make the choice that is best for you and your business.

If you have someone who doesn’t appreciate your vision they are not going to have a passion for what you are doing. If you have someone that doesn’t believe in what you are doing they are going to drain you. It will even begin to affect your personal life because we bring our work home with us.

At the end of the day as the CEO you are responsible for everything.

Some employees may not be the right fit for you, but they may be perfect for someone else.

Do you have a hiring process you use to try to avoid these troubles?

  • Integrity is the first thing to look at. People will show you who they are if you ask them the right questions, step back and let them speak. If there is a lack of integrity they are not a good fit for you.
  • The second thing I want to know is that they are coachable. I want to know they will respect me and my clients whether they agree with me or not. I also look to see if they would be a good fit for our team. Everything in your company will affect the bottom line.
  • Then lastly, they do need to have a level of skill and respect the mission and vision of the company.

Personality is a key for Sheila because the work her team does is a representation of her. She makes sure she gets along with her team members and that she is comfortable with them as well as their values line up.

We can train any tech skills they need, but you can’t teach integrity, kindness, and respect.

Body language and energy can help you get to know them even more. Regina will often stay quiet, so they will continue to elaborate on their responses.

What do you do if you find that somebody is not a good fit?

Some serious offenses just have to be rectified by letting them go. Theft, dishonesty, disrespect can’t be put up with.

Sometimes we have good people in the wrong positions, so moving an employee to a position that is a better fit solves the problem. If they are not a good fit for you then you are not a good fit for them and they will be much happier somewhere else.

It is key to understand where your team members can thrive. Open lines of communication with your employees can help you to be on the same page.
